Reporting Relationships

Reports to: Rock Valley College’s Vice President of Equity and Inclusion/ Chief Diversity Officer (CDO) reports directly to the President, serving as the executive administrator and agent of change on all matters relating to college diversity, equity, and inclusion. 

Supervision Exercised: Administrative and support staff of the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, as well as related college committees and entities.  

Job Summary:

This administrative position serves as the college’s Chief Diversity Officer (CDO).  The CDO’s role is to serve as an innovative leader, advocate for a college environment that values differences among its members, foster communication within the College, and lead strategic equity initiatives. The CDO will partner with other senior administrators and assists all units of the college in their efforts to recruit and retain a diverse faculty, staff, and student body. The CDO plans, implements, and oversees the development of objectives and programs that support a culture of open inquiry, pluralism, mutual respect and engagement throughout the campus and community.  

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Additional related duties may be assigned.

Provide strategic and ethical leadership for diversity, equity, and inclusion, which includes, but is not limited to the following: 

  1. Serving on the President’s leadership team; collaborating with other college leaders in strategic decisions, annual planning and long-range planning; and providing equity-minded, student focused insight to strategic discussions. 
  2. Demonstrating the highest ethical and professional commitment to the most recent “Standards of Professional Practice for Chief Diversity Officers in Higher Education” from the National Association of Diversity Officers in Higher Education
  3. Cultivating a campus climate inclusive of all intersecting identities and supportive of all faculty, staff and students. 
  4. Communicating the college’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion effectively to internal and external stakeholders. 
  5. Working closely with the President’s Cabinet in developing and affirming the college’s strategic plan for and shared vision of diversity, equity, and inclusion. 
  6. Working closely with Academic Affairs and Student Affairs to develop strategies, initiatives, and culturally responsive interventions to close achievement and credential gaps for vulnerable and marginalized student populations. 
  7. Monitoring, collecting, analyzing, and communicating relevant institutional and community data to advance the college’s diversity, equity, and inclusion goals. 

Academic Engagement 

Plan, implement and oversee the development of objectives and programs that support a culture of open inquiry, pluralism, mutual respect and engagement throughout the campus which includes: 

  1. Co-chairing the college’s Promoting an Inclusive Community (PAIC) committee, with regular meetings, annual programming, goals and projects, and ensuring a viable and sustainable budget. 
  2. Creating sustainable systematic supports for faculty, such as the Academy for Teaching and Learning Excellence (ATLE) and the Inclusion, Diversity and Equity Academy (IDEA), in order to provide culturally responsive pedagogical approaches for a diverse student body. 
  3. Collaborating with Academic Affairs and Student Services to provide high-impact initiatives that serve a diverse student body through curricular and co-curricular programming and assessment. 
  4. Working with Dean’s within Academic Affairs and Student Services to evaluate student demographic data by academic program in order to inform retention strategies, evaluate trends of underrepresentation, and develop strategies that focus on diversifying enrollment trends. 
  5. Working with Institutional Research and Effectiveness to develop a plan that regularly evaluates the diversity, equity, and inclusion climate for staff, faculty, and students. 

Operational Engagement  

  1. Assisting Human Resources in the review of policies and procedures through a diversity, equity, and inclusion framework for recruitment, hiring, orientation, continuous development, and retention of employees. 
  2. Assisting Human Resources in establishing and monitoring goals and initiatives for diversifying the faculty and staff of the college. 
  3. Assisting Marketing & Communications to develop culturally relevant marketing materials and a communication plan that advances the college’s strategic goals for diversity, equity, and inclusion. 
  4. Assisting Community Outreach and Workforce Development to strengthen partnerships that support the enrollment, retention, and workforce initiatives that align with the college’s strategic goals for diversity, equity, and inclusion. 
  5. Assisting in making fiscal decisions and budget allocations that align with the college’s strategic goals for diversity, equity, and inclusion that includes providing general fund support in addition to grant funds for these strategic goals.  


Cultivate a campus climate supportive of all faculty, staff and students inclusive of all intersecting identities by: 

  1. Developing campus policy, procedure, programs, and initiatives to create a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive campus climate. 
  2. Mitigating and addressing intolerance, harassment, discrimination, and incidents related to bias, hate speech, or victimization on campus.  
  3. Ensuring that diversity, equity and inclusion training is available and supported for the entire college (BoT, administrators, supervisors, staff, faculty and students). 
  4. Collaborating with President’s Cabinet to build strong relationships and establishing collaborative partnerships between the college and the communities we serve. 
  5. Partnering with the Dean of Students Office and Human Resources to investigate, mediate, and resolve complaints guided by federal, state and local laws and college regulations, procedures, and policies.  

Community Access and Equity 

Partner with other senior administrators and assist all units of the college, from student service programs and human resources to academic personnel, in their efforts to recruit and support a diverse faculty, staff, and student body which includes, but is not limited to the following: 

  1. Increasing access and educational attainment of students from marginalized communities by eliminating barriers to improve the students’ opportunities and economic mobility. 
  2. Improving college diversity, equity, and inclusion performance metrics pertaining to employees and students by evaluating institutional and community data. 
  3. Monitoring and developing programmatic responses to institutional performance metrics related to diversity, equity and inclusion (e.g., achievement and completion gaps). 
  4. Attaining grants that focus on supporting under-resourced and underserved student groups for purposes of increasing access, retention, and completion. 
  5. Developing enrollment pipeline(s) and ongoing channels of dialogue between local affinity groups and the college.

Minimum Qualifications

Master’s Degree in a field such as human resources management, humanities, or social sciences. Doctorate degree preferred. 

  1. Evidence of at least five years of progressive administrative and management experience in implementing diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, programs, and policy at an institution of higher education; community college preferred.
  2. Excellent analytical and reporting skills. 
  3. Excellent oral and written communication skills. 
  4. Excellent presentation skills. 
  5. Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of internal and external stakeholders. 
  6. Strong data analysis and institutional research skills. 
  7. Demonstrated record of administrative experience in ethical and equitable budget, organizational, and supervisory management. 
  8. Demonstrated record of administrative experience in developing policy, procedure, programs, and initiatives to support strategic goals and plans.
  9. Demonstrated sustained, inclusive, equitable, and decisive leadership in higher education.
