The School of Social Work at the University of Victoria acknowledges with respect the Songhees, Esquimalt and WSÁNEĆ peoples on whose traditional territory the university stands and whose historical relationships with the land continue to this day.

The School of Social Work within the Faculty of Human and Social Development invites applications for a continuing-appointment eligible position at the rank of Assistant Teaching Professor, to commence July 1, 2021, or as negotiated.

The School of Social Work offers an undergraduate (BSW) degree and graduate programs (MSWF, MSWA, MSWI) that emphasize social justice, Indigenous and anti-oppressive approaches to working with communities, families, and individuals. All our programs are fully accredited by the Canadian Association for Social Work Education. UVIC is home to the Centre for Indigenous Research and Community-Led Engagement (CIRCLE) and the Indigenous Mentorship Network of the Pacific Northwest (IMN-PN).

The School and our partners, who are students, staff, sessional instructors and faculty members, are committed to decolonizing, anti-racism, and anti-oppressive work in our leadership and pedagogies, and in research and education. Our goals are to establish learning opportunities in a supportive on-campus and online environment that promotes equity, respect, responsibility, curiosity, collaboration, risk-taking and creativity. Job Requirements

The School is interested in candidates who:

  • hold an MSW. BSW holders with a Masters degree in a relevant human and social science discipline may be considered.  A PhD with at least one Social Work degree is preferred;
  • have a successful record of post-secondary teaching in Social Work or a related discipline;
  • are committed to and able to articulate how their pedagogical approach fits with the School’s vision as outlined in its mission statement;
  • have 5 or more years of SW practice experience post BSW or MSW degree;
  • have experience with face-to-face and online delivery modes, i.e., a familiarity with educational technology learning management systems such as BrightSpace (D2L) and web conferencing;
  • are committed to work collegially within the School to meet overall School objectives.

    • a statement on teaching philosophy and teaching interests with specific reference to how your practice experience informs your pedagogy; and
    • how you have implemented social justice in your practice.
  • two – three samples of teaching materials you have produced, e.g. podcasts, handouts;
  • evidence of curriculum design activities, i.e. one or two course syllabi you have designed;
  • three or four evaluations of teaching from the latest courses taught

In accordance with the Collective Agreement, where an Assistant Teaching Professor meets the specified performance standards there is a normal expectation of Reappointment. An Assistant Teaching Professor may apply for Promotion to Associate Teaching Professor at the time of second Reappointment or in any year thereafter.
