Serving as the inaugural director of a new unit, this leader will be a champion for living-learning programs (LLP) at Virginia Tech. The director will promote, manage and measure the impact of a living-learning program that hosts sixteen living-learning communities and three residential colleges. Reporting to the assistant vice president (AVP) for Student Affairs & Experience VT this position will advance a collaborative and unrelenting commitment to the student experience through Virginia Tech’s nationally recognized living-learning programs. Virginia Tech’s strategic plan, Advancing Beyond Boundaries, aspires for Virginia Tech to be a destination for talented students, faculty and staff. One milestone toward attracting talented students is to offer exceptional living-learning environments for students. Our goal is for 67% of residential students to reside in living-learning programs by 2024. We are currently at 38.9% with four new living-learning communities launching in fall 2021.
The director will be responsible for ensuring living-learning programs effectively bridge academic and student life and are grounded in our collective commitment to student well-being. These programs will be exemplary laboratories for students to learn Virginia Tech’s Aspirations for Student Learning. With a visionary, learning-centered, and integrative mindset, the director will supervises two associate directors, share supervision of four residential student life coordinators, among other staff.
The director will join a talented team of student affairs professionals who are leading Virginia Tech’s Experience VT coordinating unit. The Director must cultivate strong relationships with the live-in residential college faculty principals, living-learning community program directors, residential staff, and students.
Indicators of the position’s success include measurable increases in number of students engaged in LLPs (across all student demographics), evidence of LLPs impact on student’s well-being and success, and evidence of deep engagement with program directors and faculty principals. Additionally, there is a high expectation that the new Office of Living Learning Programs will demonstrate a high level of student engagement in the residence halls including presence at evening and weekend events to support student engagement. The Director must be able to demonstrate longitudinal programmatic success and strong partnerships with academic programs leading living-learning programs.
The selected individual must be an educator committed to student success, learning, and inclusion. A doctorate and progressive experience in higher education is required. Experience and understanding of student learning, living-learning programs, and residential college literature is essential. The Director should be a collaborative, student-centered, self-starter with exceptional communication, writing, administrative, and organizational skills. The enthusiastic support of The Division’s Aspirations for Student Learning, the mission of Virginia Tech, including Inclusive VT, Beyond Boundaries, and our land grant spirit are required.
Ability to manage multiple and competing priorities and take initiative in a dynamic, fast paced environment. Ability to work collaboratively with a team of colleagues and serve as a representative of the division. Ability to successfully maintain programmatic excellence and demonstrated success in working across reporting lines to support student success. Experience leading and engaging a team. A criminal background check is required.
Experience in a Student Affairs area, especially at the director level; experience leading living-learning communities and/or residential colleges. Experience in programmatic assessment. Supervision experience.
