Modern Art The Department of Art & Art History at Stanford University announces a search for a scholar of modern art whose work extends across national boundaries and cultural traditions from the mid-19th to mid-20th centuries. We encourage applications from scholars who engage critically with both canonical and alternative histories of modernity and reach beyond the department’s existing strengths in U.S. art history, including, for example, scholars of Indigenous, African, Asian, Latin American, Caribbean, and diasporic art, architecture, and visual culture. Applicants should demonstrate a dedication to inclusive pedagogy and courses that incorporate critical approaches to the history of art. A completed Ph.D. is required as is teaching experience at both the introductory and advanced levels. We encourage applications from scholars whose research and teaching supports feminist, queer, and decolonial approaches to art history. Candidates for an untenured position at the rank of assistant professor must have a PhD or be enrolled in a PhD program or equivalent international degree-granting program at the time of application, with expected degree completion by date of appointment as an assistant professor. Candidates should demonstrate evidence of a creative research trajectory and a commitment to excellence in teaching at both graduate and undergraduate levels. Untenured applicants should send a cover letter, CV, research statement, teaching evaluations, and a writing sample along with at least three professional letters of recommendation. Candidates for a tenured position at the rank of associate or full professor must have a conferred PhD or equivalent international degree. Candidates should demonstrate substantial evidence of a creative research career, impact on his or her field of study, and a commitment to excellence in teaching and advising students at both graduate and undergraduate levels. Tenured applicants should send a letter of interest, CV, research statement, and teaching evaluations. The successful candidate will develop a cycle of introductory level and topical courses for undergraduates and, on the basis of their specific research interests, graduate-level seminars. The candidate would also bring to Stanford a program of current or future research in art history that should attract graduate students of the highest caliber. To support their research, the selected applicant may draw upon the resources and programs of Stanford's many research centers, such as Stanford Humanities Center, Clayman Institute for Gender Research, and Center for Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity.
