Job Description

 

The University of Pikeville in Pikeville, Kentucky seeks a dynamic and creative faculty teaching in a growing Criminal Justice program. Applicants must have a strong commitment to teaching in a university setting and the ability to work effectively with others in a collegial environment dedicated to student learning. The full-time, nine-month faculty appointment will begin August 2021. 

The ideal applicant will be a generalist who is prepared to teach a broad range of courses. In addition to introductory level courses, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to teach courses in corrections, law, and others based on their interests and specialization, complementing the program’s existing strengths including the growing emphasis on social justice issues.

Responsibilities:

  1. Create and maintain an environment that is conducive to innovative teaching and active learning.
  2. Emphasize broadly trained skills and a strong passion for excellence in teaching, service, and scholarship. 
  3. Develop, communicate, and fulfill effective course learning outcomes. 
  4. Teach courses utilizing no-cost course materials and Open Educational Resources (OERs).
  5. Compose and publish syllabi containing the items listed in the approved syllabus rubric.
  6. Teaching courses for both majors and non-majors.
  7. Advising students, providing service to the University community, assisting with divisional activities, and continuing scholarly growth and development. 
  8. Ability to instruct classes using face-to-face, hybrid, and fully online modalities.
  9. Establish mutual respect with students through effective and timely communication including expectations, deadlines, and feedback on work completed.
  10. Maintain good working relationships with faculty and administration in all academic and non-academic sectors.
  11. Communicate effectively with constituents within the University, surrounding community, and State regarding the University.
  12. Utilize the Learning Management System (LMS) to support classroom instruction.

 

 

Job Requirements

Education/Sill Requirements:

  • Ph.D. in Criminal Justice or Criminology are preferred but candidates with a Ph.D. in Sociology with specialization in Criminology or Criminal Justice will be considered.
  • Applicants with ABD status and within one year of completion will also be considered.
  • Professional experience, including experience in the correctional or judicial systems, and experience in developing and maintaining community partnerships, is desired but not required and should be addressed in the cover letter.

Relationships:

Position requires daily contact with co-workers, supervisor, students, faculty, and staff in order to disseminate necessary information and coordinate for daily operations. These relationships are maintained through person-to-person contact, phone, e-mail, and fax.
