Job Description

As part of the call for proposals for the Canada Research Chairs (CRC) Program, the Université de Sherbrooke (UdeS) is seeking applications from Indigenous people to fill a professorship for a Tier 1 CRC. The CRC proposal must be in line with one of the six unifying themes of the UdeS.

This call for proposals is aimed at both current UdeS professors and external candidates. The following four faculties are participating in this call for proposals: the Faculty of Education, the Faculty of Engineering, the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences and the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. The faculty affiliation will be determined on the basis of the expertise and orientation of the candidate's research program.

The Tier 1 CRC is tenable for seven years and may be renewed once for a further term of seven years. Renewal nominations, like new nominations, follow CRCP’s and UdeS’s peer review process.

The Main campus and the Health campus of the UdeS are located on the ancestral territory of the W8banaki Nation, known as Ndakina. Through the implementation of the 2021–2026 Action Plan for and with Indigenous Peoples, the UdeS is formalizing a series of commitments aimed at strengthening its ability to support the academic success of Indigenous students and to welcome and recognize Indigenous knowledge and cultures on its campuses and within its teaching, research, and community service missions. Through coordinated actions based on collaboration with Indigenous partners, the UdeS is committed to creating a socially and culturally safe environment where the realities and challenges faced by Indigenous peoples are understood, in order to promote their well-being, support their full development, and contribute to a more inclusive and just society.

DESIRED PROFILE

The candidate's main area of expertise must relate to the unifying theme mentioned above. The CRC Program was established by the Government of Canada to attract and retain some of the world's most accomplished and promising researchers.

Nominees for Tier 1 Chair positions must be full professors or associate professors who are expected to be promoted to the full professor level within one or two years of the nomination. Alternatively, if they come from outside the academic sector, nominees must possess the necessary qualifications to be appointed at these levels.

The candidate will be chosen by a selection committee based on the following criteria:

  • Scientific relevance of the proposal
  • Structuring impact and relevance of the proposal to the research themes of the UdeS and its programs
  • Ability to obtain research funding from one of the three federal research funding agencies: the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC)
  • Compliance with Tier 1 CRC selection criteria

Please visit the website of the CRC Program to find out more about the program and the eligibility criteria for candidates.

CAREER INTERRUPTIONS

In accordance with the diversity and equity objectives, career interruptions for parental, medical and family leave will be taken into account when assessing applications. As such, candidates are encouraged to identify such periods in their curriculum vitae or cover letter.

DUTIES

  • Teach at all graduate and undergraduate levels.
  • Supervise graduate students.
  • Develop fundamental, clinical and applied research activities.
  • Take part in university life.
  • Contribute to community service.

The working conditions are governed by the collective agreements in force.

Regular, full-time, tenure-track position.

Anticipated start date: To be determined.

EQUITY, DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION

The UdeS values diversity, equality, equity and inclusion in employment within its community. It is committed to supporting these values as a priority as strategic factors of excellence and supporting that diversity of perspective stimulates innovation and creativity. This commitment is formulated in its 2022-2025 Strategic Plan and its Summary for the CRCs (2022-2025).

As part of its commitment to reconciliation and healing, the UdeS has been working with members of the First Peoples for a number of years on various joint initiatives to better understand and promote their realities and their cultural heritage.

The UdeS invites all qualified individuals to apply, in particular, women, members of visible and ethnic minorities, Indigenous peoples and persons with disabilities under the Programme d’accès à l’égalité en emploi (PAEE). As such, the selection tools can be adapted to the needs of persons with disabilities who request them, in complete confidentiality. The UdeS also encourages individuals of all sexual orientations and gender identities to apply. Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority.

The nominations for Canada Research Chairs (CRC) must enable the UdeS to make progress in achieving its representation targets for women, visible minorities, Indigenous people and persons with disabilities, in accordance with the 2022–2029 CRC target-setting plan. As such, only applications from Indigenous people will be considered. Documents supporting your claim of citizenship and Indigenous affiliation will be required.

The merit of Indigenous research is assessed with respect for its specificity and in accordance with the Guidelines for the Merit Review of Indigenous Research that apply to all Indigenous research regardless of the funding agency considered.
